How to choose a flex PCB manufacturer: bend radius, stackups, QA
Published 2026-10-19
Pick a flex PCB manufacturer that can prove bend reliability (per IPC-2223), build to IPC-6013, and document ISO 9001:2015 certification.
HyperPCB specifics you can audit: ISO 9001:2015 (SGS CN-2023-Q1156, valid to Jun-2027), quotes in 24 hours with DFM in 1 business day, IPC Class 2/3 acceptance, and RoHS/REACH support.
What matters in a flex PCB manufacturer?
- Demonstrated control of flex materials (polyimide, adhesives, RA copper), coverlay registration, and stiffener fit.
- Process discipline for IPC-6013 builds and design reviews aligned to IPC-2223.
- Quantified capability on fine features (e.g., 75 μm/75 μm trace/space is common in mature flex lines; 50 μm is feasible with LDI), and clear via design windows (e.g., 0.2 mm laser/drilled microvias with suitable annular rings in non-bend areas).
Materials and stackups that survive bending
Rolled-annealed (RA) copper outperforms ED copper for dynamic bends due to higher elongation before yield. Common copper foils: 12 μm (1/3 oz), 18 μm (1/2 oz), 35 μm (1 oz); thinner copper improves flexure life. Polyimide film thicknesses of 12.5, 25, or 50 μm are typical. Adhesiveless PI reduces neutral-axis shift and improves dynamic cycling versus adhesive-based laminates. Coverlay is usually PI 12.5–25 μm with acrylic/epoxy adhesive 12–25 μm; larger openings are preferred to avoid stress risers. Use PI or FR-4 stiffeners (0.2–0.8 mm) where connectors or components mount; taper or chamfer stiffener edges to reduce strain concentration.
How tight can I bend? Minimum bend radius
Use total flex thickness t (copper + PI + adhesives + coverlay) at the bend to estimate radius. IPC-2223 design guidance commonly used in industry:
- Single-sided, static: R_min ≈ 10×t
- Double-sided, static: R_min ≈ 20×t
- Dynamic (flex-to-install cycles >10k): R_min ≈ 100×t
Example: a 2-layer flex with 25 μm PI core, 18 μm Cu each side, and coverlay stacks to roughly t ≈ 0.10 mm. Then R_min ≈ 2 mm (static) and ≈ 10 mm (dynamic). Place traces perpendicular to the bend line, avoid PTHs in bend areas, and consider hatched reference planes (25–40% openings) in dynamic zones to lower strain.
Impedance and routing on flex
Polyimide Dk is typically 3.2–3.4 (adhesives ~3.5–3.9), so verify impedance with a 2D field solver. Common differential targets: 90 Ω (USB 2.0 HS, MIPI D-PHY), 85 Ω (USB 3.x), 100 Ω (Ethernet). With a 25 μm dielectric between signal and reference and 18 μm copper, 50 Ω single-ended microstrip often lands near 35–50 μm trace width; 90 Ω differential pairs may use similar widths with gap ≈ width. Actual values vary with coverlay, copper roughness, and air exposure—simulate the exact stackup.
What should I send for first-pass DFM?
Include: layer stack (PI thickness, copper weights, adhesive presence), a bend map with radii and cycle counts, keep-out zones, coverlay openings, stiffener drawings (material, thickness, adhesive), controlled-impedance targets and test coupon preference, connector tail specs, and surface finish requirement (e.g., ENIG, immersion silver). Flag any no-flow or PSA areas and required peel strength if applicable.
Quality, compliance, and acceptance levels
HyperPCB operates an ISO 9001:2015-certified QMS (SGS CN-2023-Q1156). We build and inspect to IPC Class 2 or Class 3 acceptance criteria and support RoHS and REACH compliance for hazardous substances. Quotes are returned within 24 hours and DFM feedback within 1 business day. Our partner factory AEGIS maintains ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 management systems, plus ISO 13485:2016 (medical) and IATF 16949 (automotive). For RF flex needs, our partner also manufactures high-frequency laminates supplied to RF PCB fabricators in China, including publicly listed PCB companies.
When do medical or automotive standards apply?
If the flex is part of a regulated medical device or an automotive safety/drive module, require evidence of ISO 13485:2016 or IATF 16949 across the manufacturing chain, along with IPC Class 3 where reliability risk justifies it. Document special controls (traceability, cleanliness, biocompatibility interfaces, PFMEA/CPK targets) in the build package.
