What defines good fineline PCB quality?

Fineline PCB quality is proven by controlled trace geometry, reliable vias, low-defect surfaces for assembly, and IPC-backed test data that verifies those results.

How tight should trace width/space control be?

For production fineline work, many designs target 50–75 µm line/space with LDI imaging. A practical control target is ±10 µm critical dimension (CD) per layer, verified by SPC and microsections. External copper plating adds 10–20 µm per side before etch; your fab should define etch compensation and show post-etch CD histograms. Keep outer-layer copper light (12–18 µm) when you need <75 µm lines to limit undercut; aim for an etch factor ≥2 to reduce neck-down. Specify line/space control per layer and the measurement method (microsection vs. optical CD).

Via reliability metrics and HDI stack decisions

For plated through holes, IPC-6012 requires minimum copper thickness inside the hole of 20 µm for Class 2 and 25 µm for Class 3; ask for microsections showing wall thickness distribution. Laser microvias are most reliable at aspect ratio ≤1:1 (e.g., 100 µm depth on 100 µm diameter). Stagger stacked microvias when possible; if stacking, require resin fill and copper cap with cross-sections showing full fill and no knee cracks. Reliability evidence should include interconnect stress test (IST, IPC-TM-650 2.6.26) or multiple thermal shock cycles with pre/post microsections and resistance monitoring.

Solder mask, surface finish, and cleanliness for 0.4–0.8 mm pitch

For 0.4–0.8 mm components, keep mask dams ≥75 µm where possible; require mask registration data (±50 µm is a common capability with LPI). On ENIG, typical thickness targets are Ni 3–6 µm and Au 0.05–0.1 µm measured by XRF; consider ENEPIG if you need both fine-pitch soldering and wire bonding. Validate cleanliness via ROSE (IPC-TM-650 2.3.25) and, for fine-pitch/no-clean processes, SIR (IPC-TM-650 2.6.3.x) on representative coupons.

Impedance and loss control starts with copper and glass

Use field solvers or IPC-2141 as a first pass to size traces, then TDR coupons to confirm. Typical differential targets: 100 Ω (Ethernet), 90 Ω (USB 3.x), 85 Ω (PCIe). For high-speed layers, HVLP/VLP copper (Rz ~1–2 µm) reduces loss and impedance variability; pick spread or balanced-glass styles to mitigate weave-induced skew. For RF and mmWave, loss tangent and copper roughness dominate; select laminates accordingly and confirm with 2D coupon measurements. Our partner factory manufactures its own high-frequency laminates and supplies RF PCB fabricators in China, including publicly listed PCB companies.

What data package should you request from the fab?

  • Layer-by-layer CD/space SPC histograms and microsections showing trace profiles and copper thickness
  • PTH and microvia cross-sections with minimum/average hole wall copper, via fill percentage, and cap thickness
  • TDR impedance results tied to coupon identifiers and stack-up, including glass style and copper foil type
  • Surface finish XRF (e.g., ENIG Ni/Au) and solder mask thickness/registration report
  • Cleanliness (ROSE and, if applicable, SIR) and an AOI defect Pareto by layer
  • Warpage/bow-twist measurement and C of C to IPC Class 2 or Class 3 acceptance criteria

Process controls that correlate with consistent fineline

Look for LDI imaging, pulse-reverse copper plating, optimized desmear/plasma for HDI, oxide-alternative lamination treatments, and differential/controlled etch chemistries. Robust registration control (X-ray fiducials, inner-layer scaling), AOI before and after etch, and coupon-based verification close the loop.
